For the next 40+ days I will be sharing one of these alphabetically from the index of my "Max Lucado Devotional Bible" and ask that if you feel led to PRAY about any related topic that you do so in the comments: PRAYERS ONLY ... pray the SCRIPTURE or just from your heart.

Thanks again!

example of how to pray the Scriptures (Bible verses)

Prayer for Freedom from
Depression

" Lord, You are my Shepherd! Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff comfort me. (Ps. 23)

I confess my depression to You and in so doing I forsake it, putting it behind me forever. You have lifted me from the miry clay and set my feet upon the solid confidence of Your Word.  (Ps. 40:2) I will not give in to depression any longer. Instead I choose to hope and trust in You.

I will trust in You with all my heart, and lean not on my own understanding. In all my ways I will acknowledge You and You will direct my paths. (Prov.3:5,6)
You are the God of my strength. There is no reason for me to mourn because of the oppression of the enemy. I will go to You, unto God, my exceeding joy. I will praise You, Lord.(Ps. 43:2-4)

As the deer pants after the water brooks, so my soul pants after You, my God. My soul thirst for You, for the Living God. My tears have been my meat day and night. My soul is cast down within me, but I will yet remember You. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of Your waterspouts and the stormy waves overwhelm me, yet I know You will command Your loving kindness to reach me. Your song will return to me. I will pray to the God of my life. (Ps. 42)

I will say to You, my Rock, that You are my help, my strength, my hope, the health of my countenance, my Lord. You are freeing me from all sadness and depression. Praise Your Holy Name.

You are a shield for me, O Lord. You are my glory and the lifter of my head. As I cry unto You, You hear me out of Your holy hill. (Ps. 3:3,4) Lord, You will sustain me. Hallelujah!

Lord I know You have heard my prayers and seen my tears. You have promised to set me free and to heal me (2 Kings 20:5) from my depression. You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears and my feet from falling. I will walk before You in the land of the living. (Ps. 116:8,9)

I cried unto You, O Lord, You have brought up my soul from the grave. You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. You have turned my mourning into dancing to the end that my glory may sing praise to You, and not be silent. O Lord,my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

other scriptures: Isaiah 38:5; Isaiah 61:3; Lamentations 5:15-19; Jeremiah 31:13 plus the ones above.

(the above prayer was taken from my prayer note cards from a book, "Prayers that Prevail" - very similar to the one from Germaine Copeland above in our Daily Prayer page, which changes and updates each day with a Scripture prayed from their ministry and her many books). I am so thankful for these books that I have used countless years since the 80s and have become memorized from praying so many of them over and over all these years. They taught me so much and how to pray God's Word as I read or need it.

In the 80s and early 90s, I battled frequently with depression (clinical depression) and this one is almost entirely ingrained in my brain. Claiming and renewing my mind with Bible verses helped to heal me as I prayed God's Word. I have learned to express my heart and thoughts to God through praying His Word. When I struggle or feel myself sinking, I know WHERE TO TURN and how to pray God's Word ... it is and has been my Lifeline.

PRAYER for Our Nation

This was shared in an email from the Presidential Prayer Team:

Declaration of Independence Signer

Samuel Chase
George Washington (1732-1799), 1st President of the United States

"Almighty God: We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy Holy protection; and Thou wilt incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government; and to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the Characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." --

This prayer of George Washington appears in St. Paul's Chapel in New York City.
